Hi All,

Just picked up a new 1.5 sport on the weekend , and was wondering i how should go about running in the car. Will be using the car for a motorway commute of 80 miles a day.

Any tips ?

Also , any recommendations for best time to change gears with the car - still trying to work out where the optimum changes are?

First of all welcome!!! Wink

Second there are other topics mentioning this matter! Manual says no constant speed and not in one gear for long time for the first ~ 1000 kms! I also heard that you should do motorway journeys in order for the engine to set up!
But from what I've seen  new engines come ready for any use mention aboved from the factroy! This was something with old engines!
Just wait until 1000kms to rev hard  and you'll be ok! You won't change from 5th to 4th on a motorway trip in order to go with the manual!
About optimum changes I changed around 3000rpm a bit before the engine start screaming!

i would sugest the same as above and try not to scream around even after the 1000km mark unless you have to but since i have broken my motor in and have made some mods i've found that all 2's that i have worked on and modified really start their torque curv when you hit between 3500-4000rpm and will continue till you finally hit your rev limiter at 6700......yes i have hit this many times lol when i did a power run on the dyno over here at a place called chip torque they saw my read out after i fitted my cold air intake and as my car hits the rev limiter it is still making power at a rapid rate and they would like to move my limiter from 6700-7700 and see how that goes......

Also with running it in i have been told to every now and then do let it rev over 4000rpm but not for long as that is when your pistin will trave the full cylinder and help bed the whole thing in..

Is there a graph of the torque curve of the 1.5 engine anywhere? Mine hasn't reached 700 miles yet, so I'm avoiding anything over 4000rpm, but it certainly doesn't appear have much 'go' at that speed!

I've ridden bikes for about 30 years now and I treat new cars the same as new bikes, a tight engine is a slow engine, rev the living daylights out of it in every gear, manufacturing tolerances are much better now than say 20-30 years ago and these engines can cope with this kind of stress.
More importantly let the engine warm up, 4-5 miles and the engine is up to temp and ready for action.
