hmmm weird, on average if i watch my speed/revs and keep it about 70mph/3000 revs i manage 2 bars from sheffield back up to middlebrough, you checked your tyre pressures and the front diffuser under your front bumper??? if everything seems fine take it to your dealer, see whats happening.

Using cruise on my 1.5 Sport, I can easily get 42mpg at a constant 70mph. Stunning!

I get between 36-40mpg in my TS2 Petrol unit depending on how I drive it. I have only ever filled up with shell V-Power (I'm a strong believer in quality fuel). I also have a K&N panel filter installed.

My mileage is around 6700, I don't drive in a particularly economical manner but I have to say I'm a bit disappointed with the economy. Maybe I expected it to do more, given the Mazda's claimed figures...

I do agree with the "quality fuel" bit but the higher RON (V-Power is 99 RON) is simply not needed with these engines. In fact, to burn it properly will require the EMU to self-adjust and if it can't do it correctly, you could end up with worse fuel consumption rather than better, or worse your exhaust could even contain un-burned fuel, thus damaging your cat.

Shell state that V-Power is safe to use in ALL cars that are designed to run on leaded and unleaded fuel. From Shell website:

Q: Is Shell V-Power high performance fuel suitable for all cars?
A: All leaded and unleaded vehicles can benefit from using Shell V-Power. Some older vehicles may need to use a valve seat lubricant with Shell V-Power to help protect the valve seats recession. If in any doubt, it’s best to consult your manufacturer’s manual or your local dealer.

I realise that I'm not going to get a massive performance boost from using V-Power, but I like the fact that there are cleaning agents in the fuel which keep the engine nice and clean. It only works out at a couple of extra £ per fill up, I think it's worth it for that kind of money. I've put nearly 7000 miles worth of V-Power through my M2 and it runs just as sweet as it did when I first picked it up.

However, I will give some 95 RON fuel a go over the next few fill ups and see if there is any difference in ecomony/performance. If I get better economy then I'll start filling up with the 95 RON stuff. Wink

Update: Also checked the M2 Manual and it states that the engine runs best on ron 95 and above. Looks like it can take advantage of higher ron rated fuel.

Just to add my twopenneth worth  Smiley

I only ever use standard 95 RON unleaded and about 90% of the fill ups have been with Sainsburys fuel, I have never filled up with Tesco fuel as experience over several cars means I never will again.

I usually take about 3 weeks to do just under 300 miles, as most of my journeys are 2-7 miles with the occasional 20+ mile trip.  I (sadly) work out the consumption on every fill up and know that as of two months ago the car has averaged 42 mpg over the 28 months / 14500 miles I have owned it.  My most recent fill up was after a week of commuting (3 miles each way) and a 40 mile trip plus a few other trips, that totalled 137 miles and returned exactly 50 mpg.  Taking the car to 70 mph and above makes a massive difference when compared to staying below 60 - 65 mph.

The figures that Mazda provide are in accordance with the EU rules and are the only figures they can use.  This has been covered on another thread, so apologies for posting it again, but the actual tests used to reach the official figures are laughable compared to day to day use.  They are detailed here www.vcacarfueldata.org.uk/information/fuel-consumption-testing-scheme.asp and are based on a trip of 6.8 miles IN TOTAL!!!

Ditto - a friend of mine's (BMW) Mini was damaged in that Tesco contaminated ("oh no it isn't") fiasco.

I get roughly 42mpg at 70mph and a still respectable 32mpg at 80mph.

I didn't get caught in that (I haven't used their stuff for years).  I have never had a car that likes running on fuel from them, and my late father found the same.  The worst case was when I owned a car that could run on Super Unleaded but not normal unleaded.  Whenever I used Tesco fuel the car would "pink" it's heart out and it would take 3 - 4 fill ups with regular 4star to stop it, which made me think that it probably wasn't Super Unleaded - in fact the pinking was worse with their Super than someone else's normal unleaded!
