I own a Mazda 2 TS2 (2008 model) and I have covered a bit more than 12,000 miles so far. Since around 2 weeks ago I am hearing like a metal-grinding noise (“metal against metal” sound) when I press and release the clutch to shift gears. This also happens for a second or two when I first press the accelerator after a gear change. Lately I am also hearing the same sound when I press the accelerator to increase the speed while cruising (well after a gear shift). The sound is quite annoying and it is more prominent in the first 5 to 10 minutes of driving. When the car warms up the sound either disappears completely or the occurrences of it happening are further apart.

Any ideas of what might be the problem? Thank you all in advance.

Regards,
Carl.

Hi Carl,

The noise you hear is the pedal box flexing.  There is no cure for this problem at the moment.  Mazda are aware of the problem, but since it's not a safety issue and does not affect the use of the pedals I was told by my dealer that it's just a 'charachteristic' of the car.  The noise varies in volume depending on temperature (worse in hot weather) but it's just a case of getting used to it I'm afraid as once it starts it doesn't go away.

Hope that helps

Hi Ash,

Thanks for your reply. I will take my Mazda to the dealer's garage next week so they can have a proper look at it and will update this post accordingly.

Thanks,
Carl.

I also own a Mazda 2 with the same problem, and have reported it to my Mazda dealer who has told me that this is a characteristic of the type 2 and even if I had the clutch changed they could not guarantee it would cure the noise? I have now covered 18,000 miles, and  do not look forward to driving it another 18,000 with this problem. are there any more of you with this problem?

I have a sort of metal on metal noise or a dull 'humming' noise when sitting on the bite at certain levels of the clutch. Is this the same thing?

Hi, Takuya

I do not think your problem is the same , this is a screech when you release the clutch. Has anyone else got this problem?

Sorry, I posted a resolution under a new post today, not reading this discussion. Steven
