ok I might have made a mistake in calculating the latest one as I got back to 54mpg, I think I took the miles reading from the wrong trip computer (A rather than B or the other way round LOL) but just to clarify most driving is done @ 80mpg on the motorways guys

take it that it 80 mph? oops of course 80mph... update: I am now commuting to Sheffield on a daily basis and seen as the M62 is rubbish, I resorted to stick to A roads across the Pennines...I have all the figures in my car but despite the drop in speed to probably an average of 40-50mph over 50 miles, there is no chance the Mazda official fuel consumption figures for mixed driving are correct as I still do ~55mpg, which is good but way far from the 70mpg advertised... not good enough...

My daily commute is 15 miles each way, of which about 5 are motorway, and the rest A roads at 50mph limit, empty in the morning at 5:15 when I set off, but busy and stop/start on my way home.
My current (for just another few days) is a 1.4 S Diesel on the ASM gearbox (though thats irrelevant as it doesnt effect performance).
I recently had a fuel economy challenge with my mate who has a 1.4D Fusion....he won the game by maybe 1 mpg in the end, but I have found that however I drive my car, I really struggle to get it below 60mpg. I do drive fairly conservatively, but in the tank that I achieved my best ever performance, wiich was 64.8mpg, I was driving at 60mph on the motorway, and even going as far as slipstreaming coaches and lorries (which I cannot reccomend, its kind of stupid), just to eke out that little bit more.
Fuel went down again, and I kind of gave up and resorted to traveling again at about 75mph on the motorway and normal round time driving, but still, it did not drop below 60mpg.
I have been really impressed with the fuel economy this car has provided...I will certainly miss it.

Really nice consumption, mate! Can you write more about engine sound when it's cold and when it's warm up. How much rpm in 35mph/60mph/80mph? Thanks.

You probably won't hit the advertised mpg if you do 80mph... even at 70 you use 15% more fuel than at 50!

2009 Model Mazda 2 1.4 Diesel 5 door
I finally got to do some motorway miles, steady 75/80 gave 69.3 mpg, no aircon, tank brim to brim. My normal milage is mostly short trips 5 miles cold engine, couple of miles country lanes the rest town gives 54-60 mpg depending on if I use the aircon.

I admit I was amazed, but the figures are right I double checked. That included being stuck in a traffic jam at a road works for 20 minutes. I was keeping up with the traffic and overtaking lorries without any problem. The car does not drive like it has only 68 bhp, I can only put it down to different engine mapping for the 2009 model. The car is much better on the motorway than I expected.

Just bought the mazda 2 1.6 sport diesel & am very impressed so far...
we have done 250 miles now & its returning 55.6 mpg. I'm guessing that the engine is going to need running in a little bit more. I've been taking it easy while doing this mileage i.e. 65 on motorway & not revving the car. When we bought the car the mazda 2 that was a demonstrator was returning over 60mpg from mainly test drives...
Cheers

Hi, occassional high revs won't hurt a bit, it is excessive loads on the engine, and long idling periods, that cause unburnt fuel to coat the cylinder bores leading to glazing that will.... Chris

The diesel 2 is upto 56.3mpg & ive covered about 375miles so far....As you said i've given it the odd high revs at junctions but hopefully the MPG will keep going up & up. We were told when we bought the car that we should notice the engine to start & loosen up at about 600 miles, but i'm sure i read somewhere on here that it's usually at about 2500miles on a diesel that the engine starts to loosen & return those magical 60MPG + figures that mazda are quoting. if I sound a little naive its because this is the 1st diesel/new car we have owned & I was confused how the demonstrator could return 60MPG + with over 10,000 miles on the clock when a new car can only retrun mid 50's....

Hi there Probably doesn't belong here since i'm from Denmark, but what the .. Bought a Mazda 2 1,6 Turbodiesel last week and received it friday. Checked the net to see whether anybody had checked the real consumption instead of the quoted one, and found this thread. My first observation: Quoted figures: Mixed is at 23,8 km/l = 54,1 mpg Max value is 27 km/l = 63,5 mpg First result from the Danish jury: Car has now run 870 km / 540 miles. I'm afraid that the driving, although not revving much or driving fast, has mostly been with 3-4 persons in car (not all lightweighters), and aircon running: mpg = 49,4 or 21,4 km/l Considering conditions and the fact thar the car hasn't been broken in, im satisfied with the result so far. Especially considering other results in this thread. Regards Niels Steen Madsen
