Mazda2 TS2 1.3 petrol - high fuel consumption

I've done 500 miles so far in total, I drive Bridgend to Cardiff every day using the motorway and dual carriageway most of the way.  I drive "at" the speed limit.

Last week I got 40mpg
This week 45mpg

I've been using air con fairly heavily.

just got my mazda2 on saturday and finding the same - thought that a nice light car and publish stats would mean that it would be nice and economical but so ar not....

If you do 70 in the Mazda2 it will give you really bad MPG. It is worse in the winter, I loose about...maybe 3 mgp in January compared to July.

o dear, not good...
we just purchased a new M2 for the MPG the stats said...i thought well slightly under 54 for combined will be ok
but with these reports....thats shocking!!!
54.4 mpg 1.3 ts2 - 86ps engine...
yet ppl are receiving 35-42??? is this "combined" mileage or is it mainly urban??
do you warm the engine up before driving off or drive on a cold engine??
hard accelrator or soft?
alot of braking or hardly any? if so, soft n gentle or hard on???
all tehse will affect ur mPG...
also..u may be travelling 100miles, but if 50 miles of that is in traffic where ur braking etc, tht will affect ur mpg

I tried everything to see what was causing the MPG and for one month I drove properly ECO, but I still did 70 on the home stretch. I still got rubbish MPG. When I accelerate hard out of roundabouts and push it quite hard - but only do 60 mph on the home stretch I get muuuuuch better MPG. I just hates doing 70.

Best i got was driving to silverstone with a bunch of mates, 60 near enough the entire way. Got just a smidge over 340miles to a full tank.
That gave me a mpg figure of 45, havent beaten it yet

Same for me, my best score so far is 332 miles to a full tank. It's about a year old now with 12k miles on the clock, m2ts

Bought my Mazda 2 in Sept. Cannot believe how poor the fuel consumption is. Now with the cold weather, obviously it's even worse!!
Noticed an advert this week where Mazda have changed the consumption figures, they've now started at around 34mpg. Surely they can't do this??

Looking at the brochure for the facelifted 2 the fuel consumption figures seem the same as for the pre-facelift.  They can change the figures if changes to the car have caused them to change.  As an example the facelifted cars with the 1.3 engine now have a lower emissions figure which has resulted in the specified 0-60 time increasing by over a second.

Anyone concerned about their fuel consumption needs to be aware of the tests used (as required under EU regulations and not just made up by the manufacturer).  A link has been posted by me in the past and by cuke2u above, the engine is in the car but the entire test covers a TOTAL OF 6.8 MILES in a laboratory!!

Also the most accurate means any of us can to work out the consumption is from a full tank to a full tank and checking the miles and fuel used between the fill ups.  There can be a big difference in consumption when doing a steady 60mph compared to 70mph - each car is different and I cannot find a link to it, but I have read that and extra 10mph at those speeds can cause up to 20% worse consumption.

In case anybody would like to know my FIRST 09 Mazda 2 Sport was the 1.5 petrol model.
Gorgeous car but fuel consumption nothing like expected - normal running about was around
32-35mpg and trying to drive economically at that! I expected more?

After ONLY 2 weeks complained to dealer who said I must let it "loosen up" and to try getting
into high gears asap, coasting to lights, soft acceleration, etc. - I already did that! To be honest
I was BORED with trying to save fuel. But persevered for the next 3 months. Could stand it no
more and complained again - they diagnosed the car and found NOTHING wrong? (Over 2000mls).

The best I achieved was on a leisurely run to the coast and back, about 170 miles, no
motorways or anything over 60mph - my consumption averaged just a touch over 45mpg.

I took the bull by the horns and found myself a Mazda 2 1.6 diesel and guess what?

THE VERY FIRST TRIP OF ABOUT 25 MILES I AVERAGED 90 (NINETY) MPG!!!
Still my best effort because I was driving it so light footed and economically.
Even running around urban I can ALWAYS get over 55mpg and usual is about 65mpg.
If I do the same trip to the coast and back it is typically around 75-85mpg!

HEAVEN - this is the most economical car I have EVER known personally.
I can now drive all sorts of roads and drive with a bit of fun and still manage
60-65mpg. Although I have a small problem with the cooling fan at the moment
I have to say I still love this car and would not swap it for anything.

I honestly think over the coming years that the extra cost for the M2 diesel model
will be recovered by the pleasure and relatively low running costs.

P.S. When I "swapped" out the petrol version for the diesel the only added
expense was basically the price difference between versions, so lost nothing!
All readings from trip computer - personally I think real consumption is a touch higher?

Just tried mine out for fuel comsumption did about 200 miles urban back & forth to work etc (28 miles a day) then a good run of approx 80 miles to Lakes today driving reasonable conservately, got to 295 miles then the E & 1st bar started flashing pulled in put 30.73 litres in this meant 10 litres at least left in tank averaged 43.70 mpg not bad I suppose but wonder how it compare to the new shape Fiesta which to me looks sliighty more aerodynamic 
PS my car on 58 plate with nearly 20k miles in it

Makes intersting reading thanks for that dont think I would swap my Mazda TS2 at the mo for one of those but do admit to liking the styling
