Pretty much ever since I got my 2 I am hearing a hollow knock every time I hit a speed bump or rough road.  The noise can also be heard sometimes when going around a roundabout or very tight corner.  It can be heard at high speed or low speed and it seems to be heard at the first point you hit a speed bump which to my non-technical mind tells me it is the suspension.

I took it to the garage and they road tested and heard the same noise.  They also believe it is the suspension.  They checked that all suspension parts were secure and lubed and said it is safe to drive but keep an eye on the noise and bring back if necessary for a full check.

It is some 4 months on and the noise is still the same so I will take back to the garage.  They said they would strip the suspension down completely and find the fault.

Has anyone else been affected by this?

Cheers, Neil.

In our club we have two members had this problem. In one case they changed both rear suspension for free, in the other only on one side (for free too). There is great improvement (as users reported), but not in all cases. On some bumps and holes it makes still the noise. It is because of the construction and low weight of Mazda2.
In some cases it could be caused by the 3rd/5th door lock. In garage they can fix it.

Indeed rear window has no sound proofing but in my opinion that's not the reason :/

There are only two reasons, why:
1) 3rd/5th door lock
2) rear suspension

And as I said, some of noise will the rear suspension do always, it is because of construction of Mazda2.

hi ppl
i had same sound, took it to the garage they say they cant hear anything (usual story of them not wanting to know, after they have all your money) so i investigated it myself and it turned out to be the bottom bolts that keep the rear seat back rests in place (hinge on) when you fold them forward, there was abit of play between the coller in the hole in the back rest and the bolt/bar that went into it, goin over bumpy ground made the backrest move causing it to hit off the bar and knock knock, took it back to the garage and told and showed them the problem, 1 hour later after takin the rear seats out and sorting it there was no knock, to check this is the knock your car has open the boot and then stand and wriggle the backs of the rear seats around listening for the knockin,

hope this helps some ppl on here,

Does it sound like the exhaust? I got a sound a few months back and I assumed I'd knocked the exhaust, then a few weeks later the sound stopped...

my 3dr sport has gone in for it's first service it has a similar noise from the rear they said it had a stone wedged under the spring Huh? not sure if that's the reason as not getting the car back until wednesday as having rear window noise rectified ( a new window plus revised window seal) also the seat belt buckle squeaks where it attaches to the seat (it's having the new revised bolts that attach it) i will let you all know when i get the car back if the faults have been rectified Undecided

well just back from my hols had the car collected wednesday but only drove it today so hears what i've found so far it's just had first service @ £168 done and some things done under warranty they have fitted the new rear windows and surround which seems to have solved the problem (although i haven't been down the motorway with it yet)  they have also fitted the new bolts to the seat belts which has also solved the problem but unfortunately the rear suspension is still creaking so it will have to go back in but 2 out of 3 is not bad for a first attempt

I've started having the exact problem (3 years on). But now I'm not sure if it's always been there, but because I've always had so much ...stuff in the boot that it used to soundproof the hollow knocking sound.

I took everything out of the boot and whatnot - sound still there. It gets really irritating as the knock happens when you just go over slightly rough surfaces (like not even bumps). And when you first start hearing the sound, it's impossible to zone out of it again (you know what I mean!).

It's outside of my warranty now anyway. I remember when I had a moped (those were the days) - this typically happened when there was water in the front suspension (and hence less oil or vice versa) which didn't absorb as well as the oil suspension.

I'm either going to stick it out, or perhaps add some soundproofing somehow. I tried it with the rear door open and just pushing the car down - and you could hear it quite noticably from just standing next to it and outside the car. It's definitely the actual suspension and not the rear seat for me at least.

It's terrible riding in my girlfriend's Scirocco and then going into my own Mazda2. The difference in comfort is....so big in negative way, the VW wins hands down  (but then again my car cost only 40% of what her car cost!).
