just after some info,
im taking my car for its 1st service and im providing my own oil to keep the cost down,

semi 5-30?
fully 5-30?
or some other grade?

ive been told semi 5-30 but was after your views on this,

here the company mecanics recommend 10w40 castrol its their responsability

Exceeds European ACEA: A3, ACEA B3, meets Japanese valve train wear, VW T4 and the engine protection requirements of of GM 4718M, ILSAC GF-2 for API Certified Gasoline Engine Oils, as well as Porsche, Volvo, BMW and Mercedes Benz.

hi chris,

when you book your service just ask if you can supply your own oil for the service and they should say yes if you supply the recommened grade oil, also say you dont want screen wash top up as this costs £4. you can do this your self for free.

i bought my own oil for £22, the garage was goin to charge £34.
roughly savin total £20 on the total cost of my service

yeah just ask the service manager if its ok to supply your own oil when you book your service, and ask what oil they recommend, as long as you supply the recommended oil they should say yes.

As long as its the correct grade and specifies whether its suitable for Petrol/Diesel engines or both then basically oil is oil.
Several oil retailers make a fortune selling oil that specifies its only to be used in certain brands of cars, ie: Peugeot/Volvo, BMW/MB, Vauxhall/Opel etc, and they charge a premium for this but in reality any oil with the same specs will do exactly the same job.
I recommend you get your oil from your local Camberly Auto Factors as its a lot cheaper than Halfords.
I bought a 5 litre bottle DriveTec 5w30 fully synthetic (suitable for Petrol engines and Diesel engines) for just £25.63...The cheapest equivalent 5 litre bottle of oil at Halfords is £38.99!

Hi Guys and Girls,

I just replaced my 2003 Mazda 6 (2.3 litre) manual sedan.

The vehicle had only travelled 72,400 kms in 8 years (only used to travel to and from work).

Thinking I would use the best oil available ... Mobil 1  0-40w ... I was soon to find out that this was the worst decision.

This vehicle has been regularly dealer service since new, and followed the schedule service requirements.


The first engine lasted 42,000 kms before the NO:4 Main Bearing failed (replaced under warranty)

The second engine lasted until 61,000 kms before the NO:4 Main Bearing failed (bottom end of engine replaced under warranty)

The third engine lasted until 72,000 kms before the NO:4 Main Bearing failed.


In discussions with a Mobil Chemist and numerous engine builders the advice given to me was:

ONLY USE THE VISCOSITY and GRADE OF OIL RECOMMENDED BY THE MANUFACTURE

The Mazda 3 is another of the MZR Engine family that is well known in inside circles for its Main Bearing failures


From now on, I do two things when buying a new car.

(1) Buy the longest factory warranty I can

(2) Whatever oil the dealer uses (within reason) that is what goes into the car.
