my 08 t2 has a nasty nack of brake release over bumps or manholes. I first noticed the problem braking when coming up to a pedestrian crossing. I must had driven over a slightly sunken drain cover. The brakes actually released even with my foot on the pedal for a good few feet before regaining grip. This was concerning mainly for the pedestrian. I just thought it was a one off, but have had the same problem a few times now. its about to go in for 24K service, so i hope it gets sorted for me and other road users, seriously i move on a good 5 to 10 metres with no brakes, aahhhh!!! so anyone else witnessed this problem or similar? what did you get done about it, Help please

This sounds like something that I have had a couple of times in my 2, once on an uneven manhole and once on a bump/pothole. When I experienced similar in my previous car, a Corsa, I was told that it was the ABS kicking in.
With the Corsa it also happened when braking where there was a water leak, so a slippery surface - and both cars have done it on one particular bump near the bottom of a hill! Most people assume that ABS means the car will stop quicker but that isn't necessarily the case, but it will come to a stop with more driver control and less chance of a skid.
I am assuming that the bump momentarily confuses the ABS system into thinking a wheel has locked up, so it releases the brakes and then reapplies them. The Corsa also made a noise and you could feel a juddering on the pedal as it cut in. In each case I have been doing less than 30 mph.
In view of the diagnosis on the Corsa, I haven't taken the matter any further with the 2.

Hi, I think you are describing a suspension trait not a braking one... Chris

I don't know how to describe it properly it just feels like the car kicks to recover the traction lost over a bump! Not sure how to say it ....

Hi, if it is over wet drain covers then it'll be monentarily loss of traction, over bumps it could be the TC/ESP kicking in to compensate for loss of traction.. Chris

Thanks for the info , it's on dry surface and I don't have the TC/ESP from the sport So it must be ABS I guess?

I've had this happen to me a couple of time, and it isn't funny if it's on the approach to a busy junction / roundabout.
On both occasions I was traveling downhill towards islands on national speed limit roads. If there's a sunken manhole cover on the approach to the island this can unsettle the ABS. The closer the manhole cover is to the island the scarier it is - for both the driver and the passenger. On both occasions I honestly didn't think we were going to stop!
I know this thread is getting old now, but has anyone else had any experience of this lately?

The places where mine did this are places I drive through quite often, so I have modified the way I drive (where and when I brake etc) to stop it from happening! Having said that, I am sure it will catch me out again now. No matter how many times it has done it and how familar the location is, it is very unnerving.

HAHA it's way better than a E90 BMW does it, it happens if there is uneven tar surface especially if u brake hard.

Ah, this is what happens to be sometimes then!
It always happens when I am coming into a crossing or breaking and if there are small bumps.
It feels like the brakes just stop working for 0.3 seconds and I get the "argh im going to crash feeling" and then all returns to normal again.
Yes I get that too, only very seldomly. And then after it's happened I'm not sure if I imagined the whole thing because the brakes work fine again.
