Unfortunately you are correct, it's a bit late now. It's not just about fuel economy but about saving money, and the few miles I do @ 6,500 a year it was not economical to pay the extra £2,500! Especially when all the calculations were worked out budgeting for approx 50mpg which is less than the sales patter says. But to find that the real figure is only around 40 mpg, 5mpg more than my old 2.0l 626, is very disappointing!

You could have bought one second hand and saved yourself a bundle.  My ones worth £3500 but I only paid £1900 for it!

Just filled my new Tamura up & it has managed 44mpg & this includes 'crawling' on the M61 / M60 for  5 miles & 45 minutes.

This is promising I feel.

It's roughly 60/40 biased towards A road & motorway driving.

Hi Seagull, glad to know I am not the only one that gets a calculator out after every fill up  Cool

I can understand how you feel about the consumption of your car.  For info mine mainly has a commute of just 2-3 miles each way, and a run of around 10-15 every other weekend and further than that alternate weekends.  Not remotely the best journeys to do and I am now getting around 38-40mpg.  On better runs I have found that you need to keep the car under 60mph to get a good figure, drift towards 70mph for too long and there is a big difference.

Through experience I have found the only figure worth checking in adverts is the Urban Cycle one, and as someone has said you should then knock a little bit off of that.  Think of getting around that figure and anything more will be a bonus.  This page makes very interesting reading regarding the way the "official" figures are (have to be) obtained:

www.vcacarfueldata.org.uk/information/fuel-consumption-testing-scheme.asp

Interesting that the Urban Cycle is pretty much my trip to work, apart from the temperature and time the engine is running for!  All of the figures are obtained in laboratory conditions (so no wind resistance) on a rolling
road (so less tyre drag) and at a temperature that this country barely averages in the summer - but that is what the EU have decided is the way to do it!

Thanks Si for that link. It just shows really that the mpg in the nice sale brochures mean absolutely nothing in real life. I suppose all manufacturers are at least measured against each other the same!

I have always worked out the mpg after every fill up on all my cars. I find it can be a good early indicator if some thing is going wrong!

In over 19 years of driving there have been fewer than 10 times when I haven't recorded the mpg - leaking fuel tank, bettery disconnection wiping the mileage (on the 2) and similar reasons!  I blame my late dad for the obsession.  But its good to know I am not the only one.

Regarding the mpg tests, this is the way the EU want manufacturers to do it.  I found with my succession of Corsas that the urban figure was the one I tended to get.

Oh yea, I'll have to do it on the next tank (the Mrs uses it for work and fills up on half)

I've got another thread on this subject but yepp, the M2 fuel consumption is a bit rubbish. It likes doing 60mph, but not anything over that.

I'm averaging probably somewehre around 40mpg when I do 60, which drops to 36 if I do 70.

Wish Mazda made more fuel efficient engines, direct injection etc. It doesn't have that now has it?

Interesting this thread. People seem to be saying that 38 to 42 mpg is what they are getting for a 1.3 Mazda 2 petrol (possibly slightly higher in some circumstances)

I was getting approx 40 mpg up until the last time I checked (last summer/autumn). Then, a fortnight ago, I had my 02 sensor replaced after getting the 'check engine' light (amber). I am now getting only 36 or 37 mpg. I have been running about with my heater on etc but that shouldn't make this much difference. It's going back to the dealer tomorrow for another check up!!

Right update on a sport petrol. I did a run from silverstone to swindon nicely and got an average of 4.1, before this I didn't even know that the reader could count that high, very interesting.

Hi Benji,
I also got my mpg on the increase as another member here said the Mazda likes being driven on 60mph, or if I may improvise between 55 - 65mph on national speed limit roads and motorways

Useful to know - thanks. I was crapping myself that I wasn't even going to make it to the petrol station - about 200 yards away from the dealership!

Me too! You'd think that the dealers would at least put a gallon or so in when selling a brand new car.

For the record, my Tamura (essentially a TS2 weighed down with styling kit) seems to do 43-45mpg whether its thrashed on a dual carriageway, stuck in an urban crawl or driven gently on country roads.

Now looking at 4,200 miles and still otherwise v impressed.
However, if I win the Lotto it'll be Hello CX-7.

I bought a 2 TS2 auto in December. I have 2 problems - one with fuel consumption which is only 34 mpg verified by trip computer and checking against fuel filled. The other is that since buying my car I am having hip problems. My left hip and leg are really painful. I seem to sit very awkwardly unless I really concentrate on how I sit. I drive a lot of miles. My son who has had a 2 for 2 years says he gets back ache after a long journey. any ideas

Hi  I've had my 2 sport just 3 years. Have averaged 40 mpg over the time - country lanes mostly.
We  also tow it on an "A" frame behind our motorhome - main reason for choosing it - light weight & fun.
