On another forum a member managed another 100km before filling up after the trip computer was showing 0km remaining! Of course you never want to take that risk! Imagine if your 2 has a new gauge calibration Tongue

Have had Nov 2008 TS 5dr from new.

Recent (and now to be ongoing) MPG check over last 3/4 tank fill ups shows 31.46 avg mpg

Is there a problem with Digi readout or am I really only getting 31mpg.
Service mechanics said there was'nt a problem and no faults detected.

(half full indicator clocked off at exactly 149.6mls : = 21.4 ltr = 4.707 Galls = 31.46mpg)

Any and all help appreciated.

Half full indicator probably isn't actually half tank because of the 'reserve'. Therefore at half tank you probably haven't used as much as 21.40 litres therefore your mpg is probably a bit better. Only a thought. As previous members mention earlier in the thread, there could be as much as 7-8 litres left in the tank when the gauge shows empty.....Next time your gauge shows empty, see how many litres it takes to fill it back to the brim.

My rule of thumb is if the gauge starts flashing at around 280 miles I have done 40 mpg (that means I put in around 7 gallons, so there are at least 2 left in the tank).  I also reckon 30-40 per notch on the gaage, so your 149.4 is within what I normally get for at least 38 mpg.

As posted on page 1, I record every fill up so know how the car is doing (my last 3 fill ups have all been under 40 mpg).  Putting my sad-muppet badge on, this is how I work mine out and have done for over 15 years!!!

1.  Fill up and set trip to zero
2.  On next fill up note the mileage
3.  Take price per litre and multiply by 4.545 for price per gallon (so £1.099 per litre =£4.995 per gallon)
4.  Divide total cost by price per gallon to give total gallons
5.  Divide mileage on trip by total gallons to give miles per gallon

I know that this isn't the most scientific way to do it, and there will always be a variation in the figures.  My Corsa used to take 2 litres after the pump clicked off, and the manual told you that.  Go much over half a litre with the Mazda and you get petrol spewing out, so I usually go abbout 30-50p over.

Mine was flashing "awooga - awooga" again today, claiming to have only 69 miles remaining. Filled up and couldn't get more than 31 litres in it!

I had two bars and 73 miles to empty today after only putting 5 litres in!

I prefer a needle to the digital gauge personally.

Indeed the 2's gauge is not linear! It has ~2 gallons thought when the last bar disappears!  Now how many miles one can cover depends as always on the driving style! So maybe 50km would be a good range to have in mind and be secure!

Interesting stats guys, who has got the best range (ie mileage) out of a full tank then? I just filled up on 2 bars and will be going down Hampshire at the weekend, so I will keep an eye on it and see how far I can get with my £30!

we went to blackpool for a long weekend last year (about 320 miles from our home) filled up and got there with some fuel left (about 45 miles showing) me driving  Smiley filled up for return journey sarah driving and had to put more fuel in (about 30 miles from home) :Smiley so it just goes to show how diffrent drivers make a difference and that this year i can save money by leaving her at home Grin

Hi. New to this forum. Bought a 2 TS in Dec and very disappointed in fuel economy. As Si does, I monitor economy from full tank to full tank and on average get only 40mpg. Considering that my old 2.0l 626 did 35mpg for exactly the same driving and trips i think the 2 is very poor. Especially when I bought it to same money on fuel!

Its a bit late now...Lets face it, if you were really worried about fuel economy surely you would have bought the 1.4 Diesel!
Even when I really hammer it, as I sometimes have to do in the mornings to get to work on time, my TS2D never goes below 50mpg aound town.
When I go a bit lighter on the WOW pedal I can easily average 60mpg and the official figures for long motorway trips is over 70mpg, though I've never gone far enough to prove that yet.
I normally wait till I get down to 1/4 tank before I fill up and the last two fill ups cost me about £35 each.

Unfortunately you are correct, it's a bit late now. It's not just about fuel economy but about saving money, and the few miles I do @ 6,500 a year it was not economical to pay the extra £2,500! Especially when all the calculations were worked out budgeting for approx 50mpg which is less than the sales patter says. But to find that the real figure is only around 40 mpg, 5mpg more than my old 2.0l 626, is very disappointing!

Just got 40 mpg out of first tank full so I'm ok with that.

Display was flashing empty but it only took 33.36l to fill.

Seagull, you say you only do 6500 a year.  Is this mainly town driving? Or is it 50/50 Town/Highway?

If mainly town then your MPG seems fine.

See the Mazda 2 1.3 'what car' figures below.  I think these figures are more realistic if you minus about 4-5 miles of each total. This allows for variables which occur.

Town mpg  40.9
Out of town mpg  67.3
Average mpg  54.3
