I ordered some carbon effect mirror caps from Mazda but don't want to pay the excessive labour costs to get them fitted. However, The instructions that come in the box aren't very clear and I don't want to break or scratch anything. Has anyone changed their own covers successfully and do you have any hints and tips?

Looks good.
I may put some on my blue car one of these days when I feel like parting with a few more dollars.
